Introduced in 1951, after Henrietta Lacks died of cervical cancer at age 31, research scientists discovered something in tissue samples taken from her tumor that made vaccines as we presently know them possible.

That something was given the name "HeLa cell."

If you have received a vaccine in the past 50 years or so, HeLa cells are likely within you. Problem is that HeLa cells are mutagens; causing mutations in the genetic "instruction set" that governs the form and function of your body. They are also considered "immortal," because as long as there is a sufficient energy source, they will continue to function, even after the body's death.
